Dear Students,
RE: Community Service for SPCAEvery year, the SPCA receives numerous requests from schools to help the SPCA as part of their CIP/SL programme. We are extremely grateful for the tremendous support shown by the schools, teachers and pupils. Unfortunately, due to our small premises, there is only so much that the SPCA can accommodate by way of students volunteering at the SPCA.
But having said that, there are certainly other ways for students to get involved and help the animal welfare cause. The best way to do this is by helping us create awareness about the SPCA in their school. Very often, animals are abandoned and abused because of the lack of awareness and knowledge about their welfare.
The programme would be ideal for upper primary and lower secondary students and on a class or level basis. A certificate of participation will given at the end of the project to the participating class or level and each student that is involved in the organisation of the programme will be given a specially designed SPCA badge for their wonderful efforts. SPCA will acknowledge the hours as CIP hours.
So, how is this done?
An SPCA Day/Week can be organised in the school where:
1) Students can give presentations about the care of animals and the work of the SPCA. SPCA will provide the script and accompanying pictures for the 30-minute PowerPoint presentation. If preferred, SPCA staff can also conduct the session.2) Students can do a play about responsible pet ownership. SPCA will provide the script and simple animal masks to carry the play out. The students are welcome to put their own animal costumes together if they wish.3) An animal dedication board can be set up. Origami cat and dog shapes can be learnt in four easy steps and done after the presentation/play. The students can then pen their wish for the animals on them and stick them on these dedication boards.4) An SPCA exhibition and sale of SPCA merchandise could be organised to raise funds for the SPCA. Students can also make their own fundraising items like bookmarks (with animal welfare messages) and cookies. We can have our range of pet care leaflets and brochures on display for the student to take too at this exhibition.5) To add to the learning experience, SPCA could bring a puppy and kitten during the peak time in the school for an interaction session.6) We could include a pet food drive in the programme. Instead oftinned foods schools normally collect for homes, the school could collect tinned petfood for the animals at the SPCA.7) We could organise a competition in the school that is animal related e.g. Badge design contest or a classroom notice board decoration competition. SPCA will be glad to sponsor some prizes. On top of that, the winning class will get to visit the SPCA premises to interact with the animals and learn more about our cause. You do not have to adopt all the ideas mentioned above. Maybe about 2 or 3 of them. These are just some of the activities students can do to help the SPCA and our furry animal friends. Please do not hesitate to contact the education team at the SPCA for more details.
Thank you!
Yours sincerely,
The Education Team
